The Path of Totality

The Path of Totality is an extremely unusual experimental work on which Korn boldly teamed with dubstep/EDM producers, colliding the band’s heavy riffs and the destructive power of electronic sound head-on. With the participation of then-cutting-edge artists led by Skrillex, it attempts an unprecedented fusion of nu-metal and club music. Jonathan Davis’s unstable, earnest singing stands out all the more amid the undulating heavy bass and digital beats. A bold record that drew mixed opinions. From the aggression of the opener “Chaos Lives in Everything” and “Narcissistic Cannibal,” made with Skrillex, to a cut like “Kill Mercy Within,” every song is engaging, while “Get Up!,” also made with Skrillex, and a cut like “Way Too Far” convey the work’s experimentation. In particular, “Narcissistic Cannibal” and “Get Up!” became songs symbolizing this attempt. A record whose great appeal is a vigorous challenging spirit that, rather than merely keeping the former nu-metal style, boldly stepped into the novel texture of the club music of the time.
