Requiem

本作『Requiem』は、KORNが、自らの持つ、あの不穏なグルーヴと、深い喪失感を帯びた歌とを、より落ち着いた、円熟した表現でまとめ上げた作品だ。前作『The Nothing』での、深い悲しみを経て、その名の通り、鎮魂歌のような、静かで内省的な空気を、色濃くまとった一枚である。低くうねる重いギター、跳ねるベース、そして、ジョナサン・デイヴィスの表現力豊かな歌が、その暗く美しい世界観を、力強く形作っていく。ベテランとなってなお、その創作意欲は、少しも衰えていない。 先行シングルとなった、力強い“Start the Healing”、そして“Forgotten”、さらに、劇的な“Worst Is on Its Way”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Lost in the Grandeur”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。ジョナサン・デイヴィスの、感情を剥き出しにした歌唱が、全編で力強く冴え渡っている。 長いキャリアで培った、確かな重量感と、円熟した楽曲構築とを、極めて高い次元で両立させた一枚だ。かつての、あの荒々しい衝動を、しっかりと保ちながらも、より深く、洗練された表現へと到達している。純粋な攻撃性だけでなく、その深い叙情性と、内省性も、高く評価されている。ベテランKORNの、その円熟を示す、力強く聴き応えのある一枚と言える。バンドの健在ぶりを示す一枚だ。

Requiem is a work on which Korn pulls together its own uneasy groove and singing tinged with deep loss in a calmer, more mature expression. After the deep grief of the previous The Nothing, it is a record strongly clad in a quiet, introspective air, like a requiem, true to its name. Low, undulating heavy guitar, bouncing bass and Jonathan Davis’s expressive singing powerfully form its dark, beautiful world. Even as veterans, its creative drive has not dimmed in the least. From the powerful “Start the Healing,” which became the lead single, and “Forgotten” to the dramatic “Worst Is on Its Way,” every song is engaging, while a cut like “Lost in the Grandeur” conveys the work’s fullness. Jonathan Davis’s emotion-baring singing is powerfully in sharp form throughout. A record that united the sure weight cultivated over a long career and mature song construction at an extremely high level. While firmly keeping the former rough impulse, it reaches a deeper, more refined expression. Not only pure aggression but its deep lyricism and introspection are highly praised.
