Sonic Boom

『Sonic Boom』は、長いスタジオ作の空白を経て、KISSが自らの基本へと立ち返った第19作だ。太いギター・リフ、手拍子を誘うビート、誰もが口ずさめるコーラスを前面に置き、バンドの核を迷いなく鳴らしている。過去の名作へのオマージュを感じさせる、直球のロックンロール・アルバムである。 先行曲“Modern Day Delilah”の勢い、“Never Enough”のキャッチーさ、“Say Yeah”の大合唱、そして“Russian Roulette”の推進力まで、収録曲はいずれも即効性の高いフックを備えている。派手な仕掛けよりも、曲そのものの強さと、バンドとして一体で鳴らす手触りを大切にした作りだ。 現代的な流行を追うのではなく、KISSが最も得意とするシンプルで力強いロックンロールへ回帰した点が、本作の大きな魅力である。ライヴ会場の熱気をそのまま閉じ込めたような、堂々たるサウンドが全編を貫く。“Stand”“All for the Glory”のような曲でも、太いリフと大合唱コーラスが一貫して作品を貫き、迷いのないロックンロールが並ぶ。古典的なKISS像へ意識的に回帰したことで、かえってバンド本来の強みが鮮明に浮かび上がっている。長いキャリアを経てなお、バンドの根源的な楽しさを再確認させてくれる、充実の復活作と言える。

Sonic Boom finds KISS returning to its own basics after a long studio absence, on the band’s nineteenth album. Putting thick guitar riffs, hand-clapping beats and choruses anyone can hum up front, it sounds the band’s core without hesitation — a straight-ahead rock-and-roll album that carries a sense of homage to the classics. From the drive of the lead track “Modern Day Delilah” and the catchiness of “Never Enough” to the sing-along of “Say Yeah” and the push of “Russian Roulette,” every song carries a highly immediate hook. Rather than flashy tricks, the writing values the strength of the songs themselves and the feel of a band playing as one. Its great appeal is a return to the simple, powerful rock and roll KISS does best, instead of chasing modern trends, and a commanding sound that seems to seal in the heat of the live room runs throughout. Even after a long career, it reaffirms the band’s fundamental fun — a fulfilling comeback record.
