『Monster』は、KISSが太いギター・リフ、シンプルなビート、全員で押し出すコーラスを前面に置いた第20作だ。複雑な仕掛けよりも、曲が一発で伝わる強さと、バンドとして生々しく鳴らす手触りを何より大切にしている。前作『Sonic Boom』の路線をさらに推し進めた、直球のロックンロール作品である。 冒頭“Hell or Hallelujah”の推進力、“Freak”のキャッチーさ、“Back to the Stone Age”の勢い、そして“The Devil Is Me”の重厚さまで、収録曲はいずれもライヴ映えするフレーズで構成されている。各メンバーの個性が見えるヴォーカルと、シンプルで力強い演奏が、アルバムを軽快に進めていく。 流行の音像を追いかけるのではなく、KISSの基本にある楽しさと力強さを、現代的な録音で再確認できる点が本作の魅力だ。飾りを削ぎ落とした太いサウンドが、バンド本来の魅力をまっすぐ伝えている。“Wall of Sound”“Long Way Down”のような曲でも、太いリフとキャッチーなメロディが一貫して作品を引っ張っていく。前作からの直球路線をさらに突き詰めたことで、KISSというバンドの揺るがない本質が、より鮮明に立ち上がっている。長いキャリアの円熟期において、変わらぬロックンロールの核を力強く提示した、充実の一枚と言える。

Monster puts thick guitar riffs, simple beats and choruses pushed out by the whole band up front on KISS’s twentieth album. More than complex tricks, it values above all the strength of songs that land in one shot and the feel of a band playing rawly together — a straight-ahead rock-and-roll record that pushes the direction of Sonic Boom further. From the push of the opener “Hell or Hallelujah” and the catchiness of “Freak” to the drive of “Back to the Stone Age” and the weight of “The Devil Is Me,” every song is built from stage-ready phrases. Vocals that show each member’s personality, and simple, powerful playing, move the album along briskly. Its appeal is that, rather than chasing a trendy sound, it reaffirms the fun and force at KISS’s foundation in a modern recording, with a thick, stripped-down sound conveying the band’s native appeal directly. In the mature phase of a long career, it powerfully presents an unchanging rock-and-roll core — a fulfilling record.
