『Lick It Up』は、KISSが太いギター・リフ、直進するビート、ポール・スタンレーとジーン・シモンズの対照的な歌を前面に置いた第11作だ。装飾よりも曲の即効性を重視し、すべてが観客と一緒に歌う瞬間へと向かっている。メイクを外した新たな姿とともに放たれた、象徴的な一枚である。 冒頭のインスト“Exciter”から表題曲“Lick It Up”の開放感、“All Hell's Breakin' Loose”の荒々しさ、“Fits Like a Glove”の粘り強いグルーヴまで、曲はライヴで即座に火が付くような作りを見せる。“Young and Wasted”のような疾走曲も、作品に勢いを添える。 大きな変化の時期にありながら、KISSらしいロックンロールの核を迷いなく再確認した本作は、バンドの再出発を強く印象付ける。素顔を晒したことで、むしろ音楽そのものの強さが際立った点も見逃せない。“Not for the Innocent”“A Million to One”のような曲でも、太いリフと大合唱コーラスが一貫して作品を貫き、迷いのないロックンロールが並ぶ。メイクという大きな武器を手放してもなお、楽曲とパフォーマンスの強さで新時代を切り開いた点に、本作の歴史的な意義がある。飾りを削ぎ落とし、純粋な曲の力で勝負した、80年代中盤の充実作と言える。

Lick It Up puts thick guitar riffs, a straight-ahead beat and the contrasting voices of Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons up front on KISS’s eleventh album. Valuing the immediacy of the songs over decoration, everything heads toward the moment of singing along with the crowd — a symbolic record released alongside the band’s new, unmasked look. From the instrumental opener “Exciter” to the release of the title track “Lick It Up,” the wildness of “All Hell’s Breakin’ Loose” and the tenacious groove of “Fits Like a Glove,” the songs are built to catch fire instantly live, while a speeder like “Young and Wasted” adds drive. In a time of great change, the record firmly reaffirms KISS’s rock-and-roll core and strongly marks the band’s fresh start. It is worth noting that, having bared their faces, the sheer strength of the music stood out all the more. Stripped of decoration and won on pure song power, it is a fulfilling mid-1980s record.
