Hotter Than Hell

『Hotter Than Hell』は、KISSがデビュー作の直線的な勢いを保ちながら、より暗く、重く、湿度を帯びた音像へ踏み込んだ第二作である。分厚いベース、ざらついたギター、少しこもった録音の感触が、四人の演奏に地下室のような危険な熱を与えている。ポール・スタンレーとジーン・シモンズの対照的な歌は前作以上に濃く絡み、エース・フレーリーのリフは派手に飾るよりも、曲の足元を不穏に揺らす役割を果たす。『Got to Choose』の押し出し、『Parasite』の重いギター、『Comin’ Home』の軽快な流れ、『Let Me Go, Rock ’n’ Roll』の解放感は、それぞれ異なる表情を持ちながら、ライヴで爆発するための火種を備えている。 音質の粗さを欠点として捉えることもできるが、整い過ぎていないからこそ、バンドがまだ何者にもなり切っていない時期の切迫感が伝わる。楽曲にはポップなフックもある一方で、ブルース、ハード・ロック、ガレージ的な荒さが同居し、初期KISSの幅を見せる。後の大衆的なアンセムとは違う、夜のクラブに漂う汗と煙のような手触りこそ本作の魅力だ。KISSの初期衝動を最も生々しく閉じ込めた一枚として聴き返したい。

Hotter Than Hell keeps the debut album’s direct momentum but moves KISS into a darker, heavier, more humid sound world. Thick bass, rough guitar texture, and a slightly muffled recording create the dangerous, basement-like heat around the four players. Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons’s contrasting voices are even more pronounced, while Ace Frehley’s riffs often disturb the ground beneath the songs instead of simply decorating them. “Got to Choose” pushes hard, “Parasite” centers on a heavy guitar figure, “Comin’ Home” brings a lighter motion, and “Let Me Go, Rock ’n’ Roll” releases the energy that would later explode onstage. The rough production can be heard as a limitation, but it also preserves the urgency of a band that had not yet become fully defined. Pop hooks, blues, hard rock, and garage-like abrasion coexist throughout. Rather than offering the later KISS anthem sound, this record feels like a smoky club after midnight. Its tactile, unpolished intensity makes it one of the most revealing documents of the group’s early impulse.
