Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons’ contrasting voices, Ace Frehley’s crisp guitar and Peter Criss’s tight beat throw off one hook after another across barely thirty minutes. Straight-ahead pushers like “Room Service” and “Two Timer,” the sparkle of “C’mon and Love Me” and the guitar dynamics of “Rock Bottom” give each short song a strong character of its own, and the lean construction carries early KISS’s vivid energy directly. The closing “Rock and Roll All Nite” — the sing-along anthem that would become the band’s calling card — concentrates the essence of KISS right here.
