Killswitch Engage

『Killswitch Engage』は、マサチューセッツ州ウェストフィールドで結成されたKILLSWITCH ENGAGEのデビュー作だ。OVERCASTやAFTERSHOCKのメンバーを中心に1999年に始動した彼らは、スウェーデン産メロディック・デス・メタルのリフとハードコアを融合させ、メタルコアという様式の礎を築いた。本作はバンド唯一のFerret Musicからのリリースである。バンドは歌い手が決まる前に楽曲を書き上げ、後にNOTHING STAYS GOLDのジェシー・リーチが加入した。最初に書かれた楽曲“Soilborn”は、バンドが初めて合わせたセッションから生まれたという。 荒々しい録音の中に、後の彼らを予感させるリフとメロディが刻まれている。ヴォーカルはジェシー・リーチが務め、ギタリストのアダム・Dがドラムとプロデュースも兼任した。“Temple from the Within”“Vide Infra”“Soilborn”といった、攻撃性と叙情が交錯する楽曲が並ぶ。まだ荒削りながら、メタルコア黎明期の重要作として、今も高く評価される一枚である。リリースから5年後に再発されるという、当時のメタルコア作品としては異例の評価を得た。

Killswitch Engage is the debut by Killswitch Engage, formed in Westfield, Massachusetts. Starting up in 1999 around members of Overcast and Aftershock, they fused the riffs of Swedish melodic death metal with hardcore to lay a cornerstone for the style known as metalcore. This is the band's only release on Ferret Music. The band wrote the music before settling on a singer, later recruiting Jesse Leach of Nothing Stays Gold. The album's first-written song, "Soilborn," took shape in the band's very first jam session. Within the raw recording, riffs and melodies that hint at what they would become are etched. Jesse Leach handles vocals, and guitarist Adam D also doubled as drummer and producer. Songs where aggression and lyricism intersect line up, like "Temple from the Within," "Vide Infra" and "Soilborn." Still rough, it is a record that remains highly regarded as an important work from the dawn of metalcore. It earned a re-release five years after its original pressing, unusual for a metalcore album of the time.
