『Siege Perilous』は、KAMELOTがメロディック・メタルの力強さへクラシカルな響きと物語性を重ねた初期作であり、バンドの歴史における決定的な転機となった一枚だ。本作から、コンセプション出身のロイ・カーンがヴォーカルとして加入し、その表情豊かで気高い歌声がKAMELOTの音楽を大きく変貌させた。それまでのマーク・ヴァンダービルトとは異なる、繊細さと力強さを兼ね備えたカーンの歌唱は、バンドの表現の可能性を一気に押し広げた。ギターとキーボードが重厚な背景を作り、カーンの歌が曲に英雄的な輪郭を与えている。 “Providence”“Millennium”“King's Eyes”“Where I Reign”といった楽曲では、後年の作品ほど複雑ではないものの、その分だけメロディの良さが直接的に伝わってくる。“Rhydin”“Parting Visions”“Irea”“Once a Dream”“Siege”といった楽曲でも、荘厳なアレンジと哀感のある旋律が結び付き、叙情性とドラマ性が早くも高い水準で示される。ロイ・カーンという稀有な歌い手を得たことで、バンドのシンフォニックで演劇的な方向性はここから本格的に花開いていく。KAMELOTの黄金期の出発点を告げる、重要な意味を持つ一枚である。

Siege Perilous is an early album on which KAMELOT layered classical resonance and narrative over the strength of melodic metal, and a decisive turning point in the band’s history. From this record Roy Khan, formerly of Conception, joined on vocals, and his expressive, noble voice greatly transformed KAMELOT’s music. Different from Mark Vanderbilt before him, Khan’s singing — combining delicacy and strength — instantly widened the band’s expressive possibilities. Guitars and keyboards build a heavy backdrop, and Khan’s singing gives the songs a heroic outline. On “Providence,” “Millennium,” “King’s Eyes” and “Where I Reign,” the writing is less complex than later work, but the quality of the melody comes across all the more directly. On “Rhydin,” “Parting Visions,” “Irea,” “Once a Dream” and “Siege” too, stately arrangement joins melancholy melody, and lyricism and drama already show at a high level. Gaining a rare singer in Roy Khan, the band’s symphonic, theatrical direction begins to bloom in earnest from here. It is a record of real significance, announcing the start of KAMELOT’s golden era.
