『Point of Entry』は、JUDAS PRIESTが鋭いメタルの攻撃性を保ちながらも、より開放的で、ラジオ映えするような曲作りを試みた第7作だ。リフはシンプルに整理され、ロブ・ハルフォードの声は、単に高音を張り上げるだけでなく、歌そのものの推進力を担っている。前作『British Steel』の成功を受け、その簡潔さをさらに推し進めた一枚である。 冒頭“Heading Out to the Highway”の走り出すような爽快感、“Desert Plains”の広がりのあるメロディ、“Hot Rockin'”の勢い、そして“Solar Angels”の壮大さまで、収録曲はいずれも親しみやすいフックを備えている。“Don't Go”のような曲も、バンドの新しい一面を見せている。 バンドが持つ本来の重厚さを、より軽快で明るいメロディへと転化させている点が、本作の特徴だ。ヘヴィなだけではない、ハード・ロック的な開放感と、キャッチーな魅力を追求している。賛否はありながらも、80年代初頭のバンドが、その表現の幅を広げようとした、興味深い一枚と言える。“Turning Circles”“On the Run”のような曲でも、整理されたリフと親しみやすいメロディが結び付いている。ハルフォードの歌の魅力が光る。

Point of Entry is the seventh album on which Judas Priest, while keeping sharp metal aggression, tried more open, radio-ready writing. The riffs are simply organized, and Rob Halford’s voice carries the drive of the singing itself, not just raising a high register. Following the success of the previous British Steel, it pushes that conciseness further. From the brisk, dashing feel of the opener “Heading Out to the Highway” and the expansive melody of “Desert Plains” to the momentum of “Hot Rockin’” and the grandeur of “Solar Angels,” every song carries accessible hooks, while a cut like “Don’t Go” shows a new side of the band. Its distinction is turning the band’s native weight into lighter, brighter melody. Beyond mere heaviness, it pursues a hard-rock openness and catchy appeal. Though it drew mixed views, it is an intriguing record on which the early-1980s band sought to widen its expression — the appeal of Halford’s singing shining.
