Invincible Shield

本作『Invincible Shield』は、JUDAS PRIESTが何十年にもわたって築き上げてきたヘヴィ・メタルの語法を、いまなお力強く前へ進む力として鳴らした2024年の作品だ。重く刻むリフ、二本のギターが作り出す切れ味、威厳のある歌声、そして大きなコーラス。メタルに必要な要素をすべて備えながらも、曲は決して懐古に閉じてはいない。 冒頭“Panic Attack”の攻撃的な疾走、“The Serpent and the King”の重厚さ、表題曲“Invincible Shield”の力強さ、そして“Crown of Horns”のドラマ性まで、収録曲はいずれも高い完成度を誇っている。速い曲では鋭さを、ミドル・テンポでは圧力を、そして長尺曲ではドラマを引き出すことで、アルバム全体に豊かな幅を持たせている。 長い歴史を持つベテラン・バンドの作品でありながら、聴き手に求めるのは、過去への敬意ではなく、あくまで即時の興奮である点が本作の凄みだ。ロブ・ハルフォードの歌声も、リッチー・フォークナーらのギターも、全く衰えを見せていない。ヘヴィ・メタルが、今なお現在進行形であることを、堂々と証明してみせた、力強く充実した一枚と言える。

Invincible Shield is a 2024 album on which Judas Priest sounds the heavy-metal idiom it has built over decades as a force still powerfully moving forward. Heavily chopped riffs, the bite two guitars create, a dignified voice and big choruses — holding all the elements metal needs, the songs are by no means closed in nostalgia. From the aggressive speed of the opener “Panic Attack” and the weight of “The Serpent and the King” to the strength of the title track “Invincible Shield” and the drama of “Crown of Horns,” every song boasts high polish. By drawing sharpness from the fast songs, pressure from the mid-tempos and drama from the long pieces, it gives the whole album a rich breadth. Its power is that, though the work of a veteran band with a long history, what it asks of the listener is not respect for the past but immediate excitement. Rob Halford’s voice and the guitars of Richie Faulkner and others show no decline at all. Dignified proving that heavy metal is still ongoing, it is a powerful, fulfilling record.
