『Eclipse』は、JOURNEYが、ニール・ショーンのギターを、より前面へと押し出し、持ち前のアリーナ・ロックのメロディを、骨太で力強いリフで支えた、意欲的な後期作だ。前作『Revelation』での、アーネル・ピネダを迎えての復活を受け継ぎながらも、より硬質で、ハードなロック色を、大胆に強めている。ピネダの歌は、力強く高い音域を駆け上がり、ジョナサン・ケインの鍵盤は、楽曲に、華やかで確かな広がりを加えている。 冒頭“City of Hope”の力強い推進力、“Edge of the Moment”のドラマ性、そして“Anything Is Possible”“Resonate”“Chain of Love”のような曲まで、収録曲は、バラードの美しさを残しながらも、アルバム全体には、これまで以上に、ロックの、確かな重量感がある。ショーンのギターが、全編で、力強く冴え渡っている内容だ。 メロディックなJOURNEYと、よりハードでヘヴィなJOURNEYという、その両方の魅力を、同時に、そして存分に楽しむことができる、意欲的な一枚だ。産業ロックの枠に留まらない、バンドの、ロック・バンドとしての、確かな底力を示している。ピネダを迎えた新体制での、更なる充実と、その進化を示した、聴き応えのある力作と言える。ショーンのギターが主役の一枚だ。

Eclipse is an ambitious late-period work on which Journey pushes Neal Schon’s guitar more to the fore and supports its native arena-rock melody with sturdy, powerful riffs. While inheriting the revival welcoming Arnel Pineda on the previous Revelation, it boldly strengthens a harder rock color. Pineda’s singing runs up powerful high ranges, and Jonathan Cain’s keyboards add a flamboyant, sure expanse to the songs. From the powerful drive of the opener “City of Hope” and the drama of “Edge of the Moment” to cuts like “Anything Is Possible,” “Resonate” and “Chain of Love,” the songs keep ballad beauty yet the whole album has a sure rock weight more than before. Content in which Schon’s guitar is powerfully in sharp form throughout. An ambitious record letting you fully enjoy both appeals at once — melodic Journey and a harder, heavier Journey. It shows the band’s sure underlying strength as a rock band, not staying within the frame of arena rock. Showing further fullness and evolution in the new lineup welcoming Pineda, it is an engaging, powerful work — a record where Schon’s guitar is the star.
