本作『Freedom』は、JOURNEYが持つ、あの大らかで開かれたメロディと、卓越した演奏力とを、たっぷりと収めた、円熟の作品だ。ニール・ショーンのギターは、まるで歌うように、楽曲を力強く導き、アーネル・ピネダのヴォーカルと、厚いコーラスとが、アリーナ・ロックならではの高揚感を、正面から、力強く届けている。ベテランとなってなお、バンドの創作意欲は、少しも衰えていないことを示す一枚である。 コンパクトなヒット曲だけに寄りかかるのではなく、心温まるバラード、爽快に疾走するロック曲、そして、演奏を存分に聴かせる展開までを含めた、豊かで幅広い構成は、JOURNEYというバンドが持つ、演奏面での、確かな強さを、改めて力強く伝えている。ジョナサン・ケインの鍵盤も、その壮大な世界観を、確かに支えている。バンドの、長い歴史に裏打ちされた、確かな貫禄が全編にみなぎる。 大きなスケール感と、産業ロックならではの、覚えやすいメロディという、バンド本来の魅力を、現在進行形で、力強く鳴らし続けている点に、本作の価値がある。長い活動歴を経てもなお、その音楽的な質は、全く落ちていない。アーネル・ピネダを擁する現体制の、円熟した充実ぶりを示した、力強く聴き応えのあるメロディック・ロック作品と言える。JOURNEYの健在を示す一枚だ。

Freedom is a mature work that amply holds Journey’s generous, open melody and outstanding playing. Neal Schon’s guitar powerfully leads the songs as if singing, and Arnel Pineda’s vocals and thick choruses deliver the lift particular to arena rock head-on and powerfully. A record showing that, even as veterans, the band’s creative drive has not dimmed in the least. Rather than leaning on compact hits alone, its rich, wide construction — including heartwarming ballads, exhilarating speeding rock songs and developments that let you fully hear the playing — again powerfully conveys the sure playing strength the band Journey holds. Jonathan Cain’s keyboards also surely support that grand world. A sure dignity backed by the band’s long history fills the whole. Its value lies in powerfully keeping sounding the band’s native appeal — a large scale and memorable melody particular to arena rock — in the present. Even after a long career, its musical quality has not dropped at all. Showing the mature fullness of the current lineup with Arnel Pineda, it is a powerful, engaging melodic-rock work — a record showing Journey’s vigor.
