『Arrival』は、新ヴォーカリストとして、スティーヴ・オージェリーを迎えたJOURNEYが、長いブランクの後に制作した、意欲的なスタジオ作だ。看板であったスティーヴ・ペリーの、その大きな後を継ぐという、困難な状況の中で、オージェリーの、ペリーを彷彿とさせる、伸びやかで力強い歌声が、バンドに、新たな生命を吹き込んでいる。厚いコーラス、ニール・ショーンの歌うギター、そしてバラードの、確かな構築美が、バンドの音楽的な核を、改めて明快に示している。 冒頭“Higher Place”の力強い推進力、“All the Way”のドラマ性、そして“Signs of Life”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれもアリーナで映える、大きなメロディと、演奏の、確かな安定感を備えている。“Loved by You”“World Gone Wild”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。曲数は多いが、その一つ一つに、JOURNEYらしい魅力が息づいている。 過去の栄光を、ただなぞるだけではなく、あくまで、新しい声と共に、JOURNEYらしさを、力強く再確認してみせた一枚だ。ペリー脱退という、大きな試練を乗り越え、バンドが、力強く前へと進んだ、その姿勢が伝わってくる。オージェリーを迎えた、新体制の始まりを告げる、意欲的で聴き応えのある充実作と言える。バンドの新章の幕開けだ。

Arrival is an ambitious studio work Journey made after a long gap, welcoming the new vocalist Steve Augeri. Amid the difficult situation of succeeding the great flagship Steve Perry, Augeri’s soaring, powerful voice, evoking Perry, breathes new life into the band. Thick choruses, Neal Schon’s singing guitar and ballads’ sure structural beauty again clearly show the band’s musical core. From the powerful drive of the opener “Higher Place” and the drama of “All the Way” to a cut like “Signs of Life,” every song holds big melody that shines in arenas and a sure playing steadiness, while cuts like “Loved by You” and “World Gone Wild” convey the work’s fullness. Though there are many songs, Journey’s appeal breathes in each one. A record that, rather than merely tracing past glory, powerfully reaffirmed Journey’s character with a new voice. A stance of the band moving powerfully forward, overcoming the great trial of Perry’s departure, comes through. Announcing the start of the new lineup welcoming Augeri, it is an ambitious, engaging, fulfilling work — the opening of the band’s new chapter.
