Generations

『Generations』は、明快で力強いギター、厚みのあるキーボード、そして心地よく抜けるヴォーカルを重ね合わせた、JOURNEYの、円熟したメロディック・ロック作品だ。前作『Arrival』に続き、スティーヴ・オージェリーがヴォーカルを担当。本作の大きな特徴は、オージェリーだけでなく、ニール・ショーンをはじめ、各メンバーが、それぞれリード・ヴォーカルを取る楽曲を含んでいる点にある。長年の様式を守りながらも、曲ごとに、異なる歌の表情を置くことで、豊かな変化を作り出している。 冒頭“Faith in the Heartland”の力強い推進力、“The Place in Your Heart”の勢い、そして“A Better Life”“Every Generation”“Believe”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。大きなフックと、安定した確かな演奏とが、前向きで温かい空気を、アルバム全体へと、心地よく広げている。バンドの、一体感が伝わってくる内容だ。 各メンバーの、個性豊かな歌声を楽しめる、実験的な側面も持ちつつ、あくまでJOURNEYらしい、あの開放感を、改めて存分に味わうことができる一枚だ。バンドとしての、確かな結束と、その円熟した実力を、力強く示している。オージェリー時代の、充実を示す、聴き応えのあるメロディック・ロック作品と言える。バンドの多彩な魅力が詰まった一枚だ。

Generations is a mature melodic-rock work of Journey, layering clear, powerful guitar, thick keyboards and a pleasantly clear vocal. Following the previous Arrival, Steve Augeri handled the vocals. Its great distinction is that it includes songs on which not only Augeri but each member, led by Neal Schon, takes a lead vocal. While keeping the long-standing style, it creates rich variety by placing a different vocal expression in each song. From the powerful drive of the opener “Faith in the Heartland” and the momentum of “The Place in Your Heart” to cuts like “A Better Life,” “Every Generation” and “Believe,” every song is engaging. Big hooks and steady, sure playing pleasantly spread a positive, warm air across the whole album. Content that conveys the band’s unity. A record that, while also holding an experimental side of enjoying each member’s distinctive voice, lets you again fully savor Journey’s openness. It powerfully shows the band’s sure solidarity and mature ability. Showing the fullness of the Augeri era, it is an engaging melodic-rock work — a record packed with the band’s varied appeal.
