Out of My Tree

『Out of My Tree』は、ジョン・サイクスの切り裂くようなギターとソウルフルな歌声を、バンド一発録りに近い熱量で捉えたソロ第1作だ。BLUE MURDER解散後の1995年、マーキュリーとの日本を軸にした契約のもとで発表された。名義はシンプルに「Sykes」。前作から続くマルコ・メンドーサとトミー・オスティーンが支え、作曲・編曲・プロデュースはサイクスが一人で担っている。ジャケットはシン・リジィでもおなじみのジム・フィッツパトリックによるものだ。バンドの政治から離れ、妥協せず自分のやり方で作りたかったと本人は語っている。ギターだけでなく歌もベースの一部も自ら背負い切った、独立宣言のような作品だといえるだろう。 音は整い過ぎず、演奏がぶつかり合う瞬間の勢いを大切にしている。ブルースを芯にしたハード・ロックの中で、メロディは強く、ギターは常に曲を押し上げる。冒頭の“Soul Stealer”から、締めの穏やかな“Sleep On”まで、解き放たれた自由さが全編に流れる。私生活の混乱を抱えた時期の作品でもあり、その手触りが歌にも滲んでいる。技巧と直感の両方を自然に鳴らした、サイクスらしい一枚である。

Out of My Tree is the first solo album, capturing Sykes's slashing guitar and soulful voice with an intensity close to a live band take. Released in 1995 after Blue Murder's break-up, under a Mercury deal centered on Japan. The billing is simply “Sykes.” Marco Mendoza and Tommy O'Steen carry over from the last record, and Sykes handles the writing, arranging and production alone. The sleeve is by Jim Fitzpatrick, familiar from Thin Lizzy. He has said he wanted to get away from band politics and make it his own way without compromise — a record on which he shouldered not just the guitars but the singing and some of the bass himself, like a declaration of independence. The sound isn't over-tidied; it values the momentum of the moment when the playing collides. Within hard rock built on a blues core, the melody is strong and the guitar always lifts the song. From the opener “Soul Stealer” to the gentle closing “Sleep On,” an unleashed freedom runs throughout. It's also a record from a turbulent period in his personal life, and that texture seeps into the singing. Sounding both technique and instinct naturally — a record that's very much Sykes.
