『Reroute to Remain』は、IN FLAMESが、メロディック・デス・メタルの、その確かな核を保ちながらも、より現代的なリズム、電子的な質感、そして分かりやすいフックとを、大胆に取り入れた、極めて重要な転換作だ。副題に「14 Songs of Conscious Insanity」と冠された本作は、初期の、あの純粋なイエテボリ・サウンドから、明確に舵を切っている。ギターは、依然として鋭いままだが、その楽曲の構成には、オルタナティヴ・メタル的な、新たな感覚が、色濃く漂っている。 冒頭の表題曲“Reroute to Remain”の力強さ、そして“System”の攻撃性、さらに、疾走する人気曲“Trigger”まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。そして、クリーン・ヴォーカルを大胆に導入した、キャッチーな名曲“Cloud Connected”は、バンドの新たな方向性を、鮮やかに象徴している。“Drifter”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。 変化を、決して恐れることのない、その旺盛な姿勢が、アルバムに、独特の、確かな緊張感を与えている一枚だ。旧来の、あの美しさと、新しいモダンな攻撃性とが、激しくぶつかり合っている。従来のファンには、賛否が分かれる部分もあったが、その後の、バンドの飛躍的な商業的成功を決定づけた、極めて重要な転換点と言える。バンドの新たな挑戦が光る一枚だ。

Reroute to Remain is an extremely important transitional work on which In Flames, while keeping the sure core of melodic death metal, boldly takes in more modern rhythm, electronic texture and clear hooks. This work, subtitled “14 Songs of Conscious Insanity,” clearly steers from the early pure Gothenburg sound. The guitar is still sharp, yet a new alternative-metal sense strongly hangs over the songs’ construction. From the power of the opening title track “Reroute to Remain” and the aggression of “System” to the speeding popular “Trigger,” every song is engaging. And the catchy classic “Cloud Connected,” which boldly introduced clean vocals, vividly symbolizes the band’s new direction, while a cut like “Drifter” conveys the work’s fullness. A record whose vigorous stance, never fearing change, gives the album a distinctive, sure tension. The old beauty and a new modern aggression collide fiercely. Though there were parts that divided opinion among former fans, it can be called an extremely important turning point that defined the band’s subsequent leap in commercial success. A record where the band’s new challenge shines.
