Foregone

『Foregone』は、IN FLAMESが、イエテボリ由来の、あのメロディック・デス・メタルの感触を、力強く呼び戻しつつ、現代的な重さと、明快な構成とを組み合わせた、充実の第14作だ。近年の、よりモダンでオルタナティヴな路線から、初期の、あの攻撃性へと回帰した、ファン待望の一枚として、高く評価されている。冷たく美しいギター・メロディ、鋭いリフ、荒々しいヴォーカル、そして、必要な場面で差し込まれる、クリーンな光とが、楽曲に、強く深い陰影を与えている。 冒頭のインストゥルメンタルから、疾走する“State of Slow Decay”へと至る展開、そして“Meet Your Maker”の攻撃性、さらに“Bleeding Out”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。二部構成の表題曲“Foregone, Pt. 1”“Pt. 2”、そして“The Beginning of All Things That Will End”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。過去の、単なる再現に留まらないのは、そのリズムの硬さと、音像の大きさとが、まさに、今のバンドとして、力強く機能しているからだ。 激しさの中にも、確かなメロディがあり、キャッチーな部分にも、深い暗さが残る、その見事な二面性が、本作の大きな魅力となっている一枚だ。IN FLAMESの、長い歴史を深く知る人にも、そして、現行の、確かなヘヴィネスを求める人にも、力強く届く内容となっている。ベテランとなってなお、その創作意欲の高さを示した、聴き応えのある充実作と言える。バンドの円熟と回帰を示す一枚だ。

Foregone is a fulfilling fourteenth album on which In Flames, powerfully calling back the Gothenburg-derived melodic-death-metal feel, combines modern weight and clear construction. It is highly praised as a long-awaited record returning from the recent, more modern, alternative direction to the early aggression. Cold, beautiful guitar melody, sharp riffs, rough vocals and clean light inserted at needed points give the songs a strong, deep shading. From the development from the opening instrumental to the speeding “State of Slow Decay” and the aggression of “Meet Your Maker” to a cut like “Bleeding Out,” every song is engaging, while the two-part title track “Foregone, Pt. 1” and “Pt. 2” and a cut like “The Beginning of All Things That Will End” convey the work’s fullness. It does not stay a mere reproduction of the past precisely because the hardness of its rhythm and the size of its sound function powerfully as the band of today. A record whose great appeal is a splendid duality — there is a sure melody within the fierceness, and a deep darkness remains in the catchy parts. Content that powerfully reaches both those who deeply know In Flames’s long history and those who seek the current, sure heaviness. An engaging, fulfilling work that showed the height of the creative drive even as veterans — a record showing the band’s maturity and return.
