Better Than Raw

『Better Than Raw』は、HELLOWEENが疾走感のあるリフ、明るく強いメロディ、そして持ち前の遊び心を同居させたパワー・メタル作品だ。曲ごとの表情は多彩だが、どこを切ってもバンドらしい軽快さと、コーラスの圧倒的な強さがある。デリス期の勢いが、さらに増した一枚である。 冒頭の長い序曲から一転する“Push”の推進力、“Falling Higher”の高揚、“Hey Lord!”のドラマ性、そして“I Can”のキャッチーさまで、収録曲はいずれも明快なフックを備えている。速い曲の疾走感だけでなく、“Midnight Sun”のような中速曲のグルーヴや、アレンジの細部も大きな聴きどころだ。 前2作で確立した路線を推し進めつつ、より硬質で攻撃的な要素も加えた点が、本作の特徴である。HELLOWEENの持つ親しみやすさと、確かな演奏技術が、自然に結びついている。“Revelation”“A Handful of Pain”のような曲でも、疾走するリフと大きなコーラスが結び付き、作品に一貫した力強さを与えている。ラテン語詞の“Lavdate Dominvm”のような実験的な試みも、アルバムに幅を加えている。輝かしいメロディと、鋼鉄のような力強さが高い次元で両立した、デリス期の充実したパワー・メタル作品と言える。

Better Than Raw is a power-metal record on which Helloween sets dashing riffs, bright strong melody and its native playfulness side by side. The faces of the songs are varied, yet wherever you cut, there is the band’s lightness and the overwhelming strength of the choruses. It is a record on which the Deris-era momentum grew further. From the drive of “Push,” which shifts from a long opening overture, and the lift of “Falling Higher” to the drama of “Hey Lord!” and the catchiness of “I Can,” every song carries a clear hook. Beyond the speed of the fast songs, the groove of a mid-tempo like “Midnight Sun” and the details of the arrangements are major highlights. Its distinction is that, while pushing the direction of the previous two albums, it adds harder, more aggressive elements. Helloween’s accessibility and sure playing craft join naturally. Uniting radiant melody and a steel-like strength at a high level, it is a fulfilling power-metal record of the Deris era.
