『Jupiters Darling』は、HEARTが、太いギターを軸としたロック曲と、アコースティックな質感を持つ、静かな曲とを、極めて自然に並べた、円熟の作品だ。約10年ぶりのスタジオ作となった本作は、80年代の華やかさとも、初期の荒々しさとも異なる、ベテランならではの、落ち着いた確かな深みを持っている。アン・ウィルソンのヴォーカルは、力強く響きながらも、曲ごとの、繊細な陰影を、丁寧に描き出し、長年のバンドとしての、確かな呼吸を感じさせる。 冒頭“Make Me”の力強い推進力、“Oldest Story in the World”のドラマ性、そして“The Perfect Goodbye”のような曲まで、収録曲は、勢いだけで押し切るのではなく、メロディの、豊かな余韻や、アレンジの、繊細な空気を、何よりも大切にしている。“Move On”“Vainglorious”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。 ハード・ロックの、力強い強さと、フォーク的な、繊細な柔らかさとを、見事に両立させ、HEARTの、円熟した成熟を、深く刻んだ一枚だ。派手なヒットを狙うのではなく、あくまで、楽曲そのものの質と、姉妹の、豊かな表現力とで、じっくりと聴かせる作りとなっている。ベテランとなったHEARTの、確かな実力と、その音楽的な深みとを味わえる、聴き応えのある充実作と言える。

Jupiters Darling is a mature work on which Heart lines up, extremely naturally, guitar-centered rock songs and quiet songs with an acoustic texture. This studio work, after about ten years, holds a settled, sure depth particular to veterans, different from both the 1980s flamboyance and the early roughness. Ann Wilson’s vocals, while resonating powerfully, carefully draw each song’s delicate shading, conveying the sure breath of a long-running band. From the powerful drive of the opener “Make Me” and the drama of “Oldest Story in the World” to a cut like “The Perfect Goodbye,” the songs value above all the rich afterglow of melody and the delicate atmosphere of arrangement, rather than pushing through on momentum alone, while cuts like “Move On” and “Vainglorious” convey the work’s fullness. A record that beautifully unites hard rock’s powerful strength and a folk-like delicate softness, deeply inscribing Heart’s mature maturity. Rather than aiming for flashy hits, it lets you listen carefully on the songs’ own quality and the sisters’ rich expression.
