Lipservice

『Lipservice』は、太いギター・リフ、端正で確かなリズム、そしてスティーヴ・リーの豊かで表現力あふれる歌声を中心に据えた、円熟期のGOTTHARDの充実作だ。ハードな楽曲であっても、そのメロディは常に明快で、コーラスには、極めて自然な開放感がある。バンドの、安定した演奏力と、深い歌心とが、全編にわたって発揮された一枚である。 冒頭“All We Are”の力強い推進力、“Dream On”のドラマ性、そして代表曲となった名バラード“Lift U Up”まで、収録曲はいずれも高い完成度を誇る。“I'm Alive”の勢い、“Cupid's Arrow”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。ブルースの感覚、ポップな親しみやすさ、そしてアリーナ・ロックの大きなスケール感とが、無理なく、自然に同居している。 派手な技巧に走ることなく、あくまで、力強い演奏と、確かなメロディとで、じっくりと聴かせる作りが、本作の大きな魅力だ。とりわけ、“Lift U Up”の感動的なメロディは、バンドの代表曲の一つとして、今なお高く評価されている。スティーヴ・リーの、ソウルフルな歌声が全開となった、GOTTHARDの、円熟した安定感を示す、聴き応えのある充実作と言える。

Lipservice is a fulfilling work of the mature Gotthard, centered on thick guitar riffs, trim, sure rhythm and Steve Lee’s rich, expressive voice. Even in hard songs, the melody is always clear and the choruses have an extremely natural open feel. A record on which the band’s steady playing and deep songcraft are displayed throughout. From the powerful drive of the opener “All We Are” and the drama of “Dream On” to the classic ballad “Lift U Up,” which became a signature song, every song boasts high polish, while the momentum of “I’m Alive” and a cut like “Cupid’s Arrow” convey the work’s fullness. A blues sense, pop accessibility and the large scale of arena rock coexist unforced and naturally. Its great appeal is a construction that lets you listen carefully on powerful playing and sure melody, rather than running into flashy technique. In particular, the moving melody of “Lift U Up” is still highly praised as one of the band’s signature songs. On which Steve Lee’s soulful voice is in full bloom, it is an engaging, fulfilling work showing Gotthard’s mature steadiness.
