L'Enfant Sauvage

『L'Enfant Sauvage』は、重低音リフと変拍子的な推進力で、GOJIRAが哲学性と圧倒的な重量感を両立させた第五作だ。メジャー・レーベルのRoadrunnerからの最初のアルバムであり、バンドが広い聴衆へと届いた飛躍作でもある。タイトルは「野生の少年」を意味し、フランソワ・トリュフォーの同名映画に着想を得ている。映画が描いた、社会に属さない野生児のイメージは、自由や個であることをめぐる本作の主題と重なっている。 “L'Enfant Sauvage”“Explosia”“The Gift of Guilt”といった、力強い楽曲が並ぶ。従来の複雑さと重量感を保ちつつ、より明快で力強い楽曲構成へと踏み込んでいる。本作はアメリカやフランスなど各国のチャートで上位に入り、批評的にも高く評価された。ヘヴィネスとアクセシビリティを見事に両立させた、円熟期の始まりを告げる一枚である。楽曲はよりコンパクトにまとまりつつ、マリオの正確無比なドラムや、うねるリフの魅力はいささかも損なわれていない。この成功により、彼らはメタルの主流へと歩を進めた。以後、彼らの名は世界的なフェスティバルの常連となっていく。

L'Enfant Sauvage is Gojira's fifth album, on which they reconciled philosophical depth with overwhelming weight through low-end riffs and odd-metered drive. It is their first album on the major label Roadrunner, and the breakthrough on which the band reached a wide audience. The title means "The Wild Child," inspired by François Truffaut's film of the same name. The film's image of a feral child belonging to no society overlaps with the album's themes of freedom and individuality. Powerful songs like "L'Enfant Sauvage," "Explosia" and "The Gift of Guilt" line up. While keeping their usual complexity and weight, they stepped into clearer, more forceful song construction. The album charted high in countries including the US and France, and was highly praised critically. A record announcing the start of their mature period, splendidly balancing heaviness with accessibility. The songs are more compact, yet Mario's flawless drumming and the appeal of their surging riffs are in no way diminished. With this success, they moved into the metal mainstream. From then on, their name became a fixture at festivals around the world.
