Between Dread and Valor

本作『Between Dread and Valor』は、GALNERYUSが、新曲、インストゥルメンタル、そして再録曲を凝縮し、通常のフルアルバムとは異なる、短編ならではの、確かな密度で、その技巧と劇性とを描いた、特別な作品だ。2023年に発表された本作は、比較的コンパクトな収録時間の中に、バンドの魅力を、ぎゅっと詰め込んでいる。Syuのギターは、その速さだけでなく、楽曲を力強く押し上げる旋律としても機能し、小野正利(Masatoshi Ono)の歌は、高音の、あの圧倒的な迫力と、感情の、繊細な機微とを、自在に行き来していく。 冒頭を飾る、疾走する“Demolish the Wickedness!”の力強さ、そして“Run to the Edge”のドラマ性、さらに“Time Will Tell”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Let Us Shine”、そして“Bravehearts”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。小野正利の、圧巻のハイトーンが、全編で力強く冴え渡っている。 その収録時間は、比較的コンパクトでありながらも、作品の起伏は、実に大きい一枚だ。アグレッシヴな場面、メロディを前面に出す場面、そして各プレイヤーの卓越した個性を際立たせる場面が、無駄なく、力強く連なっていく。壮大な長編だけが、GALNERYUSの魅力ではないことを、力強く示す、鋭くまとまった聴き応えのある一枚と言える。バンドの多彩な魅力が光る一枚だ。

Between Dread and Valor is a special work on which Galneryus condenses new songs, instrumentals and re-recordings, depicting its technique and drama at a sure density particular to a short-form work, different from a usual full album. Released in 2023, it packs the band’s appeal tightly into a relatively compact running time. Syu’s guitar functions not only with its speed but as a melody that powerfully pushes the songs up, and Masatoshi Ono’s singing freely moves between the overwhelming force of the high range and the delicate nuances of emotion. From the power of the speeding opener “Demolish the Wickedness!” and the drama of “Run to the Edge” to a cut like “Time Will Tell,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Let Us Shine” and “Bravehearts” convey the work’s fullness. Masatoshi Ono’s overwhelming high range is powerfully in sharp form throughout. A record on which, while the running time is relatively compact, the work’s ups and downs are truly large. Aggressive passages, passages foregrounding melody and passages making each player’s outstanding character stand out connect powerfully without waste. A sharply pulled-together, engaging record that powerfully shows grand long-form is not Galneryus’s only appeal — a record where the band’s varied appeal shines.
