Unusual Heat

『Unusual Heat』は、FOREIGNERが新たなフロントマンを迎え、ミック・ジョーンズのギターをより硬質なサウンドの中心に置いた第7作だ。ルー・グラムの脱退後、モントローズやワイルド・ホースズで歌ったジョニー・エドワーズがヴォーカルに加入した。本作はエドワーズが在籍した唯一のアルバムであり、創設ドラマーのデニス・エリオットと長年のベーシスト、リック・ウィルスにとっても最後の作品となった。従来の大きなメロディを残しながらも、曲は80年代の滑らかさより、直線的なリフと緊張感を強く感じさせる。 “Lowdown and Dirty”“Only Heaven Knows”のような押し出しの強い曲を軸に、バンドは自らの語法を更新しようとする。エドワーズの骨太な歌声は、グラムとは異なる荒々しさをサウンドに加えた。“Moment of Truth”“When the Night Comes Down”のような楽曲では、硬質なリフと緊張感のある展開が一体となる。ジョーンズは大物歌手を招くのではなく、無名の実力派を起用することでバンド本来の姿を守ろうとした。グランジ台頭の時代に、原点回帰的な硬派なロックへ舵を切った意欲が感じられる。変化の時期だからこそ、FOREIGNERの別の質感を味わえる一枚である。

Unusual Heat is the seventh album, on which Foreigner welcomed a new frontman and placed Mick Jones's guitar at the center of a harder sound. After Lou Gramm's departure, Johnny Edwards — who had sung with Montrose and Wild Horses — joined on vocals. This is the only album with Edwards, and it became the last work for founding drummer Dennis Elliott and longtime bassist Rick Wills. While keeping the big melody of before, the songs feel strongly of straight-line riffs and tension rather than 1980s smoothness. Centered on strongly assertive songs like "Lowdown and Dirty" and "Only Heaven Knows," the band tries to update its own idiom. Edwards's robust voice added a wildness different from Gramm's to the sound. Precisely because it is a period of change, it is a record on which you can savor a different texture of Foreigner.
