Tough It Out is one of the band’s most polished melodic-rock records, built around FM’s intricate choruses and Steve Overland’s soaring voice. The guitar, keyboards and rhythm section lift the singing while giving each song a smooth drive. It further hones the ability shown on the debut under a more refined production. On “Bad Luck,” “Someday (You'll Come Running),” “Burning My Heart Down” and “Don't Stop,” melody that is refined yet never loses its warmth, and the deft distribution of heavy riffs and soft melody, stand out. A lyrical ballad like “Everytime I Think Of You” fully brings out Overland’s expressiveness too. Where a British band’s delicacy and arena-sized hooks meet ideally, it is a masterpiece representative of 1980s British AOR, long and continually loved.
