『Thirteen』は、FMが長年培ってきた都会的なメロディック・ロックを、余裕のある演奏と端正なコーラスで磨き直した第13作だ。大仰に盛り上げるのではなく、スティーヴ・オーヴァーランドの温かく力強い歌声を軸に、ギター、キーボード、リズム隊が曲のフックを丁寧に支えている。タイトルが示す通りの節目の作品でありながら、その内容には停滞の兆しがまったくない。 “Shaking the Tree”“Waiting on Love”“Be Lucky”“Fight Fire with Fire”といった楽曲では、洗練されたメロディと確かな演奏力が緊密に結び付いている。“Every Man Needs a Woman”“Be True to Yourself”のような楽曲にも、バンドらしい端正な叙情が息づいている。“Talk is Cheap”“Turn This Car Around”“Love and War”“Long Road Home”といった楽曲でも、端正なメロディと確かな演奏が結び付いている。13作目という節目にありながら、その安定した創作力と演奏の充実は、変わらぬ品の良さと共にベテラン・バンドの底力を証明している。派手さよりも持続力で聴かせ、日常に自然に寄り添う上質なAOR／ハード・ロックを鳴らし切った本作は、円熟の域に達したFMの安定した充実を伝える、味わい深い一枚である。

Thirteen is the thirteenth album on which FM re-polished the urbane melodic rock it has long cultivated with composed playing and neat choruses. Rather than grandiose build-ups, the guitar, keyboards and rhythm section carefully support the songs’ hooks, centered on Steve Overland’s warm, powerful voice. A milestone work as the title suggests, its content shows no sign of stagnation at all. On “Shaking the Tree,” “Waiting on Love,” “Be Lucky” and “Fight Fire with Fire,” refined melody and firm playing join tightly. Songs like “Every Man Needs a Woman” and “Be True to Yourself” breathe the band’s neat lyricism too. Winning through staying power rather than flash and playing through fine AOR / hard rock that naturally accompanies daily life, it is a flavorful record conveying the steady fullness of an FM that has reached maturity.
