『Synchronized』は、スティーヴ・オーヴァーランドの滑らかで力強い歌声を中心に、FMがAORとハード・ロックの境目を丁寧に磨き上げた第12作だ。ギターとキーボードは互いを邪魔することなく、曲ごとに柔らかな光沢と確かな推進力を作り出している。長いキャリアを重ねてもなお、バンドのメロディへのこだわりと演奏の充実は少しも衰えていない。 明快なロッカーからバラード寄りの叙情曲まで、楽曲の表情は多彩でありながら、どの曲にも“大人のメロディック・ロック”らしい品の良さが一貫して漂っている。表題曲“Synchronized”をはじめ、収録曲はいずれも端正なコーラスと洗練されたアレンジに彩られている。AORとハード・ロックのバランス感覚は、長いキャリアの中でさらに研ぎ澄まされている。端正なコーラスワークとオーヴァーランドの円熟した歌声の組み合わせは、FMというバンドの揺るぎない個性を改めて印象づけ、現代の英国メロディック・ロックを牽引する存在としての貫禄を漂わせている。派手な仕掛けよりも、長く聴けるメロディと演奏の呼吸を大切にする本作は、円熟期のFMがその美学を静かに深めた、上質な一枚である。歌とアンサンブルの一体感が、作品全体に心地よい安定感を与えている。

Synchronized is the twelfth album on which FM, centered on Steve Overland’s smooth, powerful voice, carefully honed the border between AOR and hard rock. The guitar and keyboards, without getting in each other’s way, create a soft sheen and firm drive in each song. Even after a long career, the band’s devotion to melody and the fullness of its playing have not dimmed in the least. From clear rockers to ballad-leaning lyrical songs, the songs’ expressions are varied, yet a “grown-up melodic rock” refinement consistently drifts through them all. Led by the title track “Synchronized,” the tracks are all colored by neat choruses and refined arrangement. Valuing long-lasting melody and the breathing of the playing over flashy devices, it is a fine record on which a mature FM quietly deepened its aesthetic, with the unity of voice and ensemble giving the whole a pleasant stability.
