『Metropolis』は、FMが滑らかなヴォーカル、洗練されたキーボード、上質なギターを用いて、英国メロディック・ロックの魅力を現代的に鳴らした復帰作だ。数年の活動休止を経て再結成したバンドは、往年の持ち味を少しも損なうことなく、むしろ円熟した表現力とともに帰ってきた。親しみやすいコーラスと落ち着いた演奏が共存し、曲は無理なく耳に残っていく。 “Wildside”“Unbreakable”“Flamingo Road”“Metropolis”といった楽曲では、長年の経験が生む余裕と、メロディを最優先にする職人技が存分に発揮されている。“Over You”“Bring Back Yesterday”のような楽曲にも、バンドらしい端正な叙情が息づいている。“Days Gone By”“The Extra Mile”“Still the Fight Goes On”といった楽曲でも、端正なメロディと洗練された演奏が結び付いている。2007年の再結成以降、バンドは精力的に活動を再開しており、本作はその復活を、全盛期を知るファンをも唸らせる完成度で確固たるものにした。復帰作でありながら、その完成度は全盛期にまったく引けを取らない。スティーヴ・オーヴァーランドの歌を軸に、FMが健在であることを高らかに示した本作は、再始動の成功を鮮やかに告げる、充実した一枚である。

Metropolis is a comeback album on which FM, using smooth vocals, refined keyboards and fine guitar, sounded the appeal of British melodic rock in a modern way. Reuniting after a hiatus of several years, the band returned without losing any of its old character — if anything, with matured expressiveness. Accessible choruses and calm playing coexist, and the songs stay in the ear without strain. On “Wildside,” “Unbreakable,” “Flamingo Road” and “Metropolis,” the composure born of long experience and craft that puts melody first are fully displayed. Songs like “Over You” and “Bring Back Yesterday” breathe the band’s neat lyricism too. Comeback album though it is, its polish is in no way inferior to the peak years. Announcing that FM is alive and well, centered on Steve Overland’s singing, it is a full record that vividly proclaims the success of the restart.
