One Step Over the Line

『One Step Over the Line』は、FIRST SIGNALが力強くも温かいヴォーカルを中心に、端正なメロディック・ロックを組み立てた2016年6月発表の第2作だ。鍵盤の彩り、歌うギター、厚いコーラスがバランスよく配置され、曲は自然に大きなサビへ向かう。前作から6年。その間にハーレム・スキャーレムは『Thirteen』で復活したが、ハリー・ヘスは各地の作家から届く良い曲を鳴らす場として、この名義を手放さなかった。 デニス・ワードに代わって舵を取ったのは、スウェーデンのプロデューサー兼ドラマー、ダニエル・フローレス。ギターとベースはミカエル・パレスが担い、初期の顔ぶれで残ったのはヘスひとりとなった。派手な実験よりも、良い歌と良いフックをきちんと鳴らすことを重視した内容。だからこそ何度聴いても流れがよく、細かなアレンジも耳に残る。90年代以降のAOR／メロディック・ハードの魅力を素直に味わえる一枚だ。フローレスはザ・マーダー・オブ・マイ・スウィートやファインド・ミーでも同様の役回りを務めており、書き、叩き、鍵盤を弾き、仕上げるまでを一人でこなす。以後この体制が三作にわたって続くことになる。

One Step Over the Line, released in June 2016, is the second album, on which First Signal built neat melodic rock around a powerful yet warm vocal. Keyboard colour, singing guitar and thick harmonies are placed in balance, and the songs move naturally toward big choruses. Six years had passed. In that time Harem Scarem had come back with Thirteen, but Harry Hess would not let go of this name as a place to sound the good songs arriving from writers everywhere. Taking the helm in place of Dennis Ward was the Swedish producer and drummer Daniel Flores. Michael Palace handled guitar and bass, and of the original team only Hess remained. It values sounding good songs and good hooks properly over showy experiment — which is why it flows well however often you play it, and why the small arrangement details stay with you. Flores plays the same role in The Murder of My Sweet and Find Me, writing, drumming, playing keys and finishing the record himself. This arrangement would run for three albums.
