Line of Fire

『Line of Fire』は、FIRST SIGNALが2019年5月に発表した第3作だ。ハリー・ヘスの伸びやかな歌を中心に、磨かれたギターと厚い鍵盤が、21世紀のAORと呼ぶにふさわしい音像を作り上げる。前作の手応えから、続編の制作は当然の流れだった。プロデュースは引き続きダニエル・フローレス、ギターとキーボードもミカエル・パレスとフローレスが担い、ベースにはヨハン・ニーマンが加わっている。 曲は端正で、サビへ向かう上昇感が明快だ。ヘスの声は年齢を重ねてなお艶を保ち、その一点だけでこの名義の存在理由が立つ。派手な技巧を競うのではなく、良い歌を良い音で届けることに徹している。企画物と呼ばれようが、鳴っている音の質は疑いようがない。ハーレム・スキャーレム、マグナム、テンといったバンドを好む耳には、そのまま届く一枚である。パワー・バラードから全開のハード・ロックまで振れ幅はあるが、根にあるメロディの芯は一貫している。ヘスはこの声で長いキャリアを築いてきた人物であり、ここでもその強みを迷いなく使っている。デニス・ワード期の第1作、フローレス期の第2作を経て、この体制がひとまず安定を見た一枚でもある。

Line of Fire, released in May 2019, is First Signal's third album. Around Harry Hess's soaring singing, polished guitar and thick keyboards build a picture that deserves to be called 21st-century AOR. After the reception of the previous record, a follow-up was a matter of course. Daniel Flores produced again, he and Michael Palace again handled guitars and keyboards, and Johan Niemann came in on bass. The songs are neat and the climb toward the chorus is unmistakable. Hess's voice keeps its gloss with the years, and on that alone this name justifies its existence. Rather than competing in flash, it commits to delivering good songs in good sound. Call it a project if you like — the quality of what is playing is not in doubt. For ears that like Harem Scarem, Magnum or Ten, it lands directly. The range runs from power ballads to full-on hard rock, but the melodic core underneath is consistent. Hess built a long career on this voice and uses that strength here without hesitation. After Ward's first album and Flores's second, this is where the arrangement settled.
