『FWX』は、FATES WARNINGが鋭いギター、抑制されたリズム、深い陰影を持つ歌を用いて、内側へと向かうプログレッシヴ・メタルを作り上げた作品だ。バンドにとって10作目にあたる本作は、派手な技巧を誇るよりも、余白と緊張の変化によって感情を積み上げていく。複雑な構成の中にも、人間的な迷いや孤独を映し出すメロディが常に息づいている。タイトルはバンドの頭文字と作品番号を組み合わせたもので、長いキャリアの一つの通過点を示している。“Another Perfect Day”“Heal Me”“Crawl”“A Handful of Doubt”といった楽曲でも、内省的な歌と緻密な演奏が緊密に結び付いている。 “Left Here”“Simple Human”“River Wide Ocean Deep”“Wish”といった楽曲では、内省的なヴォーカル・メロディと緻密なアンサンブルが緊密に結び付き、静かな緊張が全編を貫いている。“Sequence #7”のような楽曲には、実験的な要素も顔を出す。長年培ってきた実験性を保ちながら、より落ち着いた言葉で深い感情を伝える本作は、成熟したバンドの内省的な一面を鮮やかに映し出した、FATES WARNINGらしい一枚である。

FWX is a record on which FATES WARNING built an inward-turning progressive metal using sharp guitars, restrained rhythm and singing with deep shadow. The band’s tenth album, it builds emotion through changes of space and tension rather than boasting flashy technique. Even within the complex construction, a melody reflecting human doubt and solitude always breathes. On “Left Here,” “Simple Human,” “River Wide Ocean Deep” and “Wish,” introspective vocal melody and detailed ensemble join tightly, and a quiet tension runs throughout. A song like “Sequence #7” shows experimental touches too. Keeping the experimentalism cultivated over years while conveying deep emotion in more settled words, it vividly reflects the introspective side of a mature band — a record that is unmistakably FATES WARNING.
