Disconnected is a record on which FATES WARNING enveloped Ray Alder’s emotional singing in complex meters and restrained riffs. Returning from the previous album’s long suite form to individual songs, it still keeps its introspective, tension-filled style. The songs do not head immediately for resolution, showing new layers with each listen. From “Disconnected, Pt. 1” to “Disconnected, Pt. 2,” the album carefully depicts themes of isolation and unease through complex construction. On “One,” “Pieces of Me” and “Still Remains,” deep emotional sway dwells within restrained dynamics. Using construction not to show off technique but to depict inner disconnection and unease, it is an important later-period record holding a quiet weight. The longer you listen, the more its detailed design and emotional depth rise up.
