The Phantom Agony

『The Phantom Agony』は、オランダのシンフォニック・メタル・バンド、EPICAのデビュー作だ。ギタリストのマーク・ヤンセンが、AFTER FOREVERを脱退した後に立ち上げたバンドの最初の一枚であり、彼が書き続ける組曲「The Embrace That Smothers」の第4章から第6章が収められている。オーケストラと合唱、ソプラノ歌唱を重厚なリフに重ね、壮大なシンフォニック・メタルを提示している。バンドは当初「Sahara Dust」を名乗っていたが、KAMELOTのアルバム名にちなんでEPICAへと改名した。 シモーネ・シモンズの伸びやかなメゾソプラノと、ヤンセンのデス・グロウルという対照が、初期から確立されている。宗教が抱える問題を主題にした“Cry for the Moon”、疾走する“Feint”、そして荘厳な表題曲まで、劇的な楽曲が並ぶ。クラシカルな管弦楽と合唱団を全面的に導入した構築美が、後のEPICAの礎を築いた。壮大さと荒々しさが同居する、意欲的な出発点である。本作はザッシャ・パエスのプロデュースのもと制作され、シンフォニック・メタルの新たな才能の登場を印象づけた。

The Phantom Agony is the debut by Epica, the Dutch symphonic metal band. It is the first record by the band that guitarist Mark Jansen launched after leaving After Forever, and it contains parts four through six of the suite "The Embrace That Smothers," which he continues to write. Layering orchestra, choir and soprano vocals over weighty riffs, it presents grand symphonic metal. The band was originally called Sahara Dust and renamed itself Epica after an album by Kamelot. The contrast between Simone Simons's soaring mezzo-soprano and Jansen's death growls is established from the start. From "Cry for the Moon," themed on the problems of organized religion, to the racing "Feint" and the solemn title track, dramatic songs line up. Structural beauty that fully incorporates classical orchestra and choir laid the foundation for later Epica. An ambitious starting point where grandeur and rawness coexist. Produced by Sascha Paeth, it announced the arrival of fresh talent in symphonic metal.
