『The Holographic Principle』は、EPICAが現実と虚構、宇宙と意識という壮大な主題に挑んだ第7作だ。シモーネ・シモンズ(ヴォーカル)、マーク・ヤンセン(ギター/グロウル)、イサーク・デラハイエ(ギター)、コーエン・ヤンセン(キーボード)、ロブ・ファン・デル・ロー(ベース)、アリエン・ファン・ウェーセンベーク(ドラム)という充実の布陣で制作された。合唱と管弦楽を全面的に用い、シンフォニック・メタルの様式を極限まで押し広げている。 “Eidola”の荘厳な開幕、“Universal Death Squad”の激烈な疾走、9分を超える表題曲“The Holographic Principle - A Profound Understanding of Reality”の大伽藍は、バンドの到達点を示す。“Beyond the Matrix”のドラマティックな展開も印象深い。“Edge of the Blade”のキャッチーな躍動、“Ascension - Dream State Armageddon”の劇的な展開も、アルバムの多彩な表情を伝える。緻密な構築と圧倒的なスケールを両立させた本作は、円熟期のEPICAを代表する力作である。

The Holographic Principle is the seventh album, on which EPICA took on the grand themes of reality and illusion, the universe and consciousness. It was made with the full lineup of Simone Simons (vocals), Mark Jansen (guitar/growls), Isaac Delahaye (guitar), Coen Janssen (keyboards), Rob van der Loo (bass) and Ariën van Weesenbeek (drums). Using choir and orchestra fully, it pushed the symphonic-metal style to its limit. The solemn opening of "Eidola," the ferocious drive of "Universal Death Squad" and the great cathedral of the over-nine-minute title track "The Holographic Principle - A Profound Understanding of Reality" show the band's attainment. The dramatic development of "Beyond the Matrix" is memorable too. Balancing precise construction and overwhelming scale, it is a powerful work representing EPICA in their mature period.
