『The Savage Poetry』は、過去曲を現在の演奏と音作りで照らし直す、EDGUYの再構築型作品だ。本作は、バンドがデビュー前の1995年に自主制作した最初期のデモ『Savage Poetry』を、成長したメンバーで全面的に再録音したものである。過去の素材をなぞるだけではなく、録音時点の声、音圧、アレンジ感覚で照らし直すことで、EDGUYの変化を確認できる。 テンポやキーの違い以上に、コーラスの重ね方、ギターの距離感、リズムの沈み込みに現在のバンド像が出ている。元の楽曲を知っている場合は、懐かしさだけでなく、どこを強調し直しているかに注目したい。オリジナルの『Savage Poetry』はわずかな枚数しかプレスされなかった幻のデモであり、ファンにとっては長らく入手困難な作品だった。本作での再録音により初期の楽曲が広く聴かれるようになった意義は大きく、デビュー作以前の楽曲でありながら後のEDGUYへとつながるメロディ・センスの萌芽が随所に感じられる、バンドの原点を知る上で貴重な一枚だ。新作としての驚きとは別種の面白さがあり、キャリアの節目を振り返る入口にもなる。代表曲の再確認と同時に、EDGUYが自分たちの歴史をどう整理しているかを読むための、興味深い一枚である。

The Savage Poetry is a reconstruction-type work by EDGUY that re-illuminates past songs with present-day playing and sound. It is a full re-recording, by the grown members, of the band’s earliest self-produced 1995 demo Savage Poetry. Rather than merely tracing the past material, by re-illuminating it with the voice, sound pressure and arrangement sense at the time of recording, one can confirm EDGUY’s change. More than differences of tempo or key, the present band shows in how the choruses are layered, the distance of the guitar and the sinking of the rhythm. If you know the original songs, turn your ear not only to nostalgia but to where they re-emphasize. There is an interest of a kind different from the surprise of a new work, and it also becomes an entrance to look back on a career milestone. It is an intriguing record for both re-confirming signature songs and reading how EDGUY organizes their own history.
