『Kingdom of Madness』は、EDGUYがスピード感のあるリフ、ハイトーン・ヴォーカル、勇壮なコーラスをまとめたデビュー作だ。演奏には粗さも残るが、その分だけバンドが前へ進もうとする熱量がまっすぐ伝わってくる。当時まだ10代だったトビアス・サメットを中心に、若きバンドの衝動が刻まれた一枚である。 “Paradise”“Wings of a Dream”“The Kingdom”といった楽曲では、中世的な題材やファンタジーの色合いを、若い勢いで押し切る姿が魅力だ。“Heart of Twilight”“Steel Church”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい荒削りな魅力が息づいている。“Dark Symphony”“Deadmaker”“When a Hero Cries”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい荒削りな魅力が息づいている。後にアヴァンタジアという壮大なプロジェクトで世界的な名声を得るトビアス・サメットの記念すべき出発点でもあり、ジャーマン・パワー・メタルの新星の登場を告げる一枚だ。ハロウィンやブラインド・ガーディアンといった先達の影響を、自分たちの熱量で消化している。後年の洗練を知る耳には、原点ならではの飾らない衝動が新鮮に響く、意欲的なデビュー作だ。

Kingdom of Madness is the debut on which EDGUY brought together speedy riffs, high-toned vocals and heroic choruses. Some roughness remains in the playing, but that much more, the heat of the band trying to push forward comes across directly. Centered on Tobias Sammet, then still a teenager, it is a record that carved a young band’s impulse. On “Paradise,” “Wings of a Dream” and “The Kingdom,” the appeal is the sight of pushing through medieval subjects and a fantasy coloring with young momentum. Songs like “Heart of Twilight” and “Steel Church” breathe an early rough appeal too. They digest the influence of forebears like Helloween and Blind Guardian with their own heat. To ears that know the later refinement, the unadorned impulse of the origin rings fresh — an ambitious debut.
