『When Dream and Day Unite』は、DREAM THEATERが、長く複雑な楽曲構成、変拍子、そして技巧的な演奏とを、若々しく力強い衝動とともに提示した、鮮烈なデビュー作だ。ジョン・ペトルーシ、ジョン・マイアング、マイク・ポートノイらの、卓越した演奏は、この時点で、すでに極めて高い密度で、緊密に絡み合っている。ヴォーカルはチャーリー・ドミニシ、キーボードはケヴィン・ムーアが担当した、初期の編成による一枚である。 冒頭“A Fortune in Lies”の力強い推進力、そして、超絶技巧のインストゥルメンタル“Ytse Jam”、さらに“The Killing Hand”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Status Seeker”“Afterlife”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。ラッシュや、ラット・トレイスなどの影響を感じさせつつも、その独自の音楽性は、すでに明確だ。 後年の、あの完成された姿と比べれば、確かに粗削りな部分もあるが、その分だけ、実験への旺盛な意欲が、鮮明に表れている一枚だ。バンドの核となる、あの卓越した演奏美学が、最初の段階から、すでに強く現れている。プログレッシヴ・メタルという、一つのジャンルへの、確かな出発点を示した、力強く意欲的な名デビュー作と言える。バンドの原点がここにある。

When Dream and Day Unite is a vivid debut on which Dream Theater presents long, complex song construction, odd meters and technical playing along with a youthful, powerful impulse. The outstanding playing of John Petrucci, John Myung, Mike Portnoy and the others already intertwines at extremely high density at this point. A record by the early lineup, with Charlie Dominici on vocals and Kevin Moore on keyboards. From the powerful drive of the opener “A Fortune in Lies” and the virtuosic instrumental “Ytse Jam” to a cut like “The Killing Hand,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Status Seeker” and “Afterlife” convey the work’s fullness. While evoking influences such as Rush, its own musicality is already clear. A record on which, though there are certainly rough parts compared to the later polished form, a vigorous drive toward experiment appears all the more vividly for it. The outstanding playing aesthetic at the band’s core already appears strongly from the first stage. A powerful, ambitious debut showing a sure starting point toward the progressive-metal genre — the band’s origin here.
