The Astonishing

『The Astonishing』は、DREAM THEATERが近未来を舞台にした物語を、全34曲・二幕構成のロック・オペラとして描いた第13作だ。音楽が機械に支配された世界と、それに抗う人々を、オーケストラを交えた壮大なアレンジで綴る。登場人物や場面の変化に合わせて楽曲が表情を変え、鍵盤、ギター、リズム隊が物語の背景と緊張を細かく作り込む、極めて野心的な作品である。 “Dystopian Overture”の重厚な導入、“The Gift of Music”の高揚、悪役を描く“Lord Nafaryus”の劇性、そして“The Road to Revolution”“Our New World”まで、断片的な楽曲が連なって一つの物語を形づくる。技巧的な演奏はもちろん多いが、本作の中心は音で世界を構築することにある。登場人物ガブリエルやフェイスを軸にした物語は、二時間を超えるスケールで展開する。“Moment of Betrayal”“Losing Faythe”の叙情まで、静と動の対比が全編に配置されている。賛否を大きく呼んだ実験作だが、長い時間をかけて一つの物語へ没入したい時にこそ、そのスケールが生きる一枚だ。

The Astonishing is the thirteenth album, on which Dream Theater renders a story set in the near future as a rock opera of thirty-four songs across two acts. It tells of a world where music is ruled by machines and the people who resist, through grand arrangement taking in an orchestra. Songs change their faces with the shifts of character and scene, and keyboards, guitar and rhythm section carefully build the story's backdrop and tension — an extremely ambitious work. From the weighty introduction of "Dystopian Overture" to the lift of "The Gift of Music," the drama of the villain's "Lord Nafaryus," and on to "The Road to Revolution" and "Our New World," fragmentary songs link into a single story. There is of course much virtuoso playing, but the center of the work is building a world in sound. A divisive experiment, its scale comes alive precisely when you want to immerse yourself in one long story.
