『Distance over Time』は、長大な物語作『The Astonishing』の後に、よりコンパクトで集中力の高いプログレッシヴ・メタルへ回帰した第14作だ。重く刻まれるギター、複雑でありながら推進力を失わないマンジーニのドラム、緻密なベース、色彩豊かな鍵盤が、それぞれを誇示するのではなく曲の緊張を組み立てる。今回は特にリフの強さとサビへの到達感が、作品の中心として機能している。 “Untethered Angel”が硬質なリフで幕を開け、“Fall Into the Light”は攻撃性とメロディを両立させる。“Paralyzed”のキャッチーさ、“Barstool Warrior”の叙情、そして“Pale Blue Dot”の壮大さまで、短い曲でも拍子や質感が自在に変化する。本作はマンジーニのドラムが最も生き生きと機能した一枚でもある。ヴォーカルのメロディには内省的な温度があり、複雑な展開の中にも親しみやすさが宿る。ヘヴィなギター・サウンドは近年でも屈指の存在感を持ち、複雑さを愛するリスナーにも純粋に力強いロックを求めるリスナーにも届く、演奏力と構成力を再確認させる一枚だ。

Distance over Time is the fourteenth album, returning to a more compact, focused progressive metal after the long-form story of The Astonishing. Heavily cut guitar, Mangini's complex yet drive-keeping drums, detailed bass and colorful keyboards build the songs' tension rather than showing themselves off. This time the strength of the riffs and the sense of arrival at the chorus function as the center of the work. "Untethered Angel" opens with a firm riff, and "Fall Into the Light" combines aggression with melody. From the catchiness of "Paralyzed" to the lyricism of "Barstool Warrior" and the grandeur of "Pale Blue Dot," meter and texture change freely even in the shorter songs. The heavy guitar sound has some of the strongest presence of recent years, reaching both listeners who love complexity and those who want purely powerful rock — a record that reaffirms the band's playing and construction.
