『Black Clouds & Silver Linings』は、DREAM THEATERが、複雑で緻密な構成、卓越した演奏、そしてドラマティックな歌メロを、大きなスケールで束ね上げた、充実の作品だ。わずか6曲ながら、そのいずれもが長尺で、聴き応えは十分にある。創設ドラマーである、マイク・ポートノイが在籍した、この時期の、最後のスタジオ作にあたる、極めて重要な一枚である。長い楽曲であっても、その場面転換は多く、緊張と解放とが、何度も、力強く訪れていく。 冒頭を飾る、16分に及ぶ壮大な大作“A Nightmare to Remember”、そして、疾走する人気曲“A Rite of Passage”、さらに“Wither”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。ポートノイの禁酒をテーマとした組曲の完結編“The Shattered Fortress”、そして、感動的な大作“The Best of Times”、19分の“The Count of Tuscany”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。とりわけ、亡き父に捧げた“The Best of Times”は、感動的な内容だ。 その卓越した技巧の見せ場は、確かに多いが、それぞれが、大きな物語の流れの中に、巧みに組み込まれている一枚だ。プログレッシヴ・メタルの、その壮大さと、深い感情の振幅とを、同時に、そして存分に堪能することができる。一つの大きな時代を締めくくった、力強く聴き応えのある傑作と言える。バンドの一つの到達点だ。

Black Clouds & Silver Linings is a fulfilling work on which Dream Theater bundles complex, precise construction, outstanding playing and dramatic vocal melody on a grand scale. Though just six songs, each is long and fully engaging. It is the last studio work of this period the founding drummer Mike Portnoy belonged — an extremely important record. Even in long songs, the scene changes are many, and tension and release arrive powerfully many times. From the grand 16-minute opener “A Nightmare to Remember” and the speeding popular “A Rite of Passage” to a cut like “Wither,” every song is engaging, while “The Shattered Fortress,” the conclusion of the suite themed on Portnoy’s sobriety, the moving epic “The Best of Times” and the 19-minute “The Count of Tuscany” convey the work’s fullness. In particular, “The Best of Times,” dedicated to his late father, is moving content. A record on which the showcases of outstanding technique are certainly many, yet each is deftly built into the flow of a big story. You can fully enjoy both the grandeur of progressive metal and its deep emotional range at once. A powerful, engaging masterpiece that capped one great era — one arrival point of the band.
