In the Night

『In the Night』は、DREAM EVILが伝統的ヘヴィ・メタルの太いリフ、勇壮なコーラス、熱い歌を正面から鳴らした第5作だ。前作から4年を経た2010年に発表された。わかりやすいフックと硬派なリズムが結び付き、クラシックなメタルの楽しさを今の音で再確認させる。フレドリック・ノルドストレーム、ニクラス・イスフェルト、ペーテル・ストールフォシュという結成以来の3人が、変わらず中心にいる。ギターにはダニー・デーモンが加わり、ドラムはパット・パワーが引き続き支えた。ノルドストレームは本業の名プロデューサーとしても極めて多忙な時期にあり、活動間隔はどうしても開いていく。 複雑さよりも、拳を上げたくなるリフとサビの直進力を楽しむための一枚だ。冒頭の“Immortal”から表題曲、“Bang Your Head”“See the Light”“Electric”“Frostbite”“Mean Machine”を経て、締めの“The Unchosen One”まで12曲。吸血鬼やトロールといった題材を大真面目に、しかしどこか楽しげに扱う姿勢も健在である。難しいことを考えず、メタルの様式美に身を委ねたい時に合う一枚だ。

In the Night is the fifth album, on which Dream Evil sound traditional heavy metal's thick riffs, heroic choruses and hot singing head-on. Released in 2010, four years after the last record. Easy hooks and hard-nosed rhythm bind together, letting you re-confirm classic metal's fun in a contemporary sound. Fredrik Nordström, Niklas Isfeldt and Peter Stålfors — the three constants since the formation — remain at the center. Dannee Demon joined on guitar and Pat Power continued on drums. Nordström was extremely busy in his main job as a celebrated producer, so the gaps between records inevitably widened. Rather than complexity, this is a record for enjoying the straight-ahead force of riffs and choruses that make you raise a fist. From the opener “Immortal” to the title track, “Bang Your Head,” “See the Light,” “Electric,” “Frostbite” and “Mean Machine,” through to the closing “The Unchosen One,” there are twelve songs. The stance of treating vampires and trolls with total seriousness — yet somehow gleefully — is intact. A record for when you want to give yourself over to metal's formal beauty without overthinking.
