Epicloud

『Epicloud』は、デヴィン・タウンゼンド・プロジェクトが巨大なコーラス、分厚いギター、電子的な質感、そして意外なほど親しみやすいメロディを一体化させた作品だ。音の情報量は多いが、曲の中心には常に明快な歌と、まっすぐなポジティヴさが置かれている。ゴスペル的な合唱まで取り込んだ、多幸感あふれる一枚である。 冒頭“Effervescent!”からの高揚、“True North”の壮大さ、“Lucky Animals”のキャッチーさ、そして“Kingdom”“Grace”の感動的な広がりまで、収録曲はいずれも大きなスケールと分かりやすいフックを両立させている。ヘヴィな場面と柔らかな場面が大きな波のように入れ替わり、アルバム全体に独特のスケール感を与えている。 複雑さを誇示するのではなく、音の壁を「祝祭」の感覚へと転化させた点に、本作の魅力がある。圧倒的な音像と、温かく親しみやすいメロディが、高い次元で同居しているのだ。“Liberation”“Where We Belong”のような曲でも、壮大なコーラスと明快なメロディが結び付き、作品に一貫した多幸感を与えている。デヴィン・タウンゼンドの持つポジティヴでスケールの大きな側面が、最も鮮やかに結実した、充実の代表作と言える。

Epicloud is a record on which the Devin Townsend Project unifies huge choruses, thick guitar, electronic textures and surprisingly approachable melody. The density of sound is high, yet a clear vocal and a straightforward positivity are always at the center of the songs — a euphoric record that even takes in gospel-like choir. From the lift out of the opener “Effervescent!” and the grandeur of “True North” to the catchiness of “Lucky Animals” and the moving expanse of “Kingdom” and “Grace,” every song unites large scale with clear hooks. Heavy scenes and soft scenes swap like great waves, giving the whole a distinctive sense of scale. Its appeal lies in turning the wall of sound into a feeling of celebration rather than showing off complexity. Overwhelming sound and warm, approachable melody coexist at a high level. It is a fulfilling landmark on which Devin Townsend’s positive, large-scale side comes to its most vivid fruition.
