『Z²』は、デヴィン・タウンゼンドが圧倒的な音の密度、ポップなメロディ、奇抜なユーモア、そして深い叙情性を、二つの異なる側面として展開した二枚組の大作だ。ヘヴィなギターと多重コーラスは壁のように押し寄せるが、その内側には常に繊細な旋律が丁寧に埋め込まれている。 前半のディスクでは“Rejoice”“Universal Flame”“Sky Blue”のように、開放的でメロディアスな音世界が広がる。一方、後半では『Ziltoid the Omniscient』の続編として、“March of the Poozers”“Dimension Z”のような、混沌としたSF物語が壮大に展開していく。対照的な二枚が、一つの作品として並置されているのが面白い。 大作志向でありながら、遊び心を決して失わないのが、この作品ならではの魅力だ。混沌と美しさ、シリアスさとユーモアを同時に抱え込み、聴くたびに違う入口が見つかる。“Silent Militia”“Ziltoidian Empire”のような曲でも、混沌とした音像とキャッチーなメロディが結び付き、二枚組の作品に豊かな起伏を与えている。ボリュームがありながらも、退屈させない構成力が光る。デヴィン・タウンゼンドの多彩な引き出しを、一度に味わえる、スケールの大きな充実作と言える。

Z² is a double-album epic on which Devin Townsend develops overwhelming density of sound, pop melody, eccentric humor and deep lyricism as two different sides. Heavy guitar and layered choruses surge like a wall, yet delicate melody is always carefully embedded within. On the first disc, an open, melodic sound world spreads out, as in “Rejoice,” “Universal Flame” and “Sky Blue.” On the second, as a sequel to Ziltoid the Omniscient, a chaotic sci-fi story unfolds grandly, as in “March of the Poozers” and “Dimension Z.” It is intriguing how two contrasting discs are set side by side as one work. Its distinctive appeal is that, while epic-minded, it never loses its playfulness. Holding chaos and beauty, seriousness and humor at once, it offers a different entrance with each listen. It is a large-scale, fulfilling record that lets you savor Devin Townsend’s many-sided repertoire all at once.
