『Stormbringer』は、『Burn』で始まった第3期DEEP PURPLEが、従来のハード・ロックの枠をさらに押し広げ、メンバーそれぞれの志向を濃く刻み込んだ作品である。リッチー・ブラックモアのギターは依然として鋭く、表題曲では嵐のような緊張を生む一方、グレン・ヒューズのファンク／ソウル感覚とデイヴィッド・カヴァデールのブルージーな歌が、曲の重心をより柔らかく揺らしていく。『Love Don’t Mean a Thing』の軽やかな跳ね、『Holy Man』の温かな歌心、『You Can’t Do It Right』の引き締まったリズムには、この編成ならではの色彩がある。 そこへ『Soldier of Fortune』の静かな哀感が置かれることで、アルバムは単なる激しさの連続ではなく、光と影を持つ一つの流れとして聴こえる。ブラックモアが求める硬質なロックと、ヒューズが持ち込むソウルフルな方向性の緊張も、本作の音楽を豊かにする要素だ。全員が同じ場所だけを目指していないからこそ、曲ごとに独特の引力が生まれている。DEEP PURPLEの定型を期待するだけでは捉え切れないが、第3期の多彩さと人間的な熱を知るには格好の一枚である。

Stormbringer takes the Mark III Deep Purple sound beyond the framework of traditional hard rock and captures the individual instincts of its members in especially vivid form. Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar is still sharp and forceful, creating storm-like urgency in the title track, yet Glenn Hughes’s funk-and-soul sensibility and David Coverdale’s bluesy delivery make the album’s center of gravity move with greater flexibility. The light bounce of “Love Don’t Mean a Thing,” the warm songcraft of “Holy Man,” and the tight rhythm of “You Can’t Do It Right” all reveal colors unique to this lineup. “Soldier of Fortune,” placed at the other end of the emotional spectrum, gives the record a quiet, reflective shadow. The creative tension between Blackmore’s preference for hard-edged rock and Hughes’s more soulful direction also helps make the music rich rather than uniform. Because the members are not aiming at exactly the same destination, each song develops its own pull. It may not fit a narrow idea of what Deep Purple should be, but it is one of the best places to hear the range, warmth, and humanity of Mark III.
