Rust

『Rust』は、CRASHDIETがグラム/スリーズ・メタルの派手さを保ちながら、より重く、傷を抱えたような空気まで取り込んだ第5作だ。2017年12月に加入したガブリエル・ケイを歌い手に迎えた最初の作品で、2019年9月、実に6年ぶりの新作として発表された。歪んだギターは鋭いリフで曲を押し出し、華やかなコーラスは暗さを打ち消すのではなく、そこから抜け出すための光として響く。マーティン・スウィートがプロデュースし、デビュー作を手がけたクリス・レイニーがミックスを担当している。北欧盤は自主レーベルからの発売だった。 スピード感のある曲ではタイトなリズムと大きなフックが火花を散らし、ミドルテンポでは声の切実さとメロディの哀愁が前に出る。ソロやリード・フレーズは80年代的な快楽を十分に備えながら、曲の感情線を外さない。先行公開された“We Are the Legion”“Reptile”“Idiots”“In the Maze”が牽引し、締めの“Filth & Flowers”まで緩みがない。タイトルが示す錆びた質感は、派手なロックの表面の下にある疲労や執着を感じさせるものだ。煌びやかさと陰影を両立させた、成熟を聴かせる一枚である。

Rust is the fifth album, on which Crashdïet kept glam/sleaze metal's flash while taking in a heavier air, as if carrying wounds. It's the first record with Gabriel Keyes, who joined in December 2017, released in September 2019 as their first new album in six years. Distorted guitar pushes the songs with sharp riffs, and the flashy choruses don't cancel the darkness but sound like light for getting out of it. Martin Sweet produced, and Chris Laney — who worked on the debut — mixed. On the fast songs, tight rhythm and big hooks throw sparks; on the mid-tempos, the urgency in the voice and the melodies' wistfulness come forward. The solos and lead phrases carry plenty of '80s pleasure while never missing the songs' emotional line. The pre-released “We Are the Legion,” “Reptile,” “Idiots” and “In the Maze” lead the way, and it doesn't slacken through the closing “Filth & Flowers.” The rusted texture the title suggests isn't mere dark staging — it evokes the fatigue and obsession beneath flashy rock's surface. A record balancing glitter and shadow that lets you hear their maturity.
