Automaton

『Automaton』は、ガブリエル・ケイを迎えて2作目となるCRASHDIETが、自らの荒々しいグラム・メタル像を再起動した第6作だ。2022年4月に発表され、バンド自身がプロデュースを手がけている。危険なムードを持つリフと甘いメロディの落差、80年代的なコーラスと現代的な音圧が共存する。時代に合わせて音を更新しながら、ジャンルの芯は決して手放さないという姿勢が、全編をはっきりと貫いている。 短い序奏の表題曲から“Together Whatever”“Shine On”へ流れ込み、“No Man's Land”の旋律美、“Darker Minds”の中毒性、“Shell Shock”の推進力、“We Die Hard”の力強さ、締めのバラード“I Can't Move On (Without You)”まで起伏が大きい。“Powerline”にはスティール・パンサーのマイケル・スターがゲスト参加した。コロナ禍でツアーが制限されるなかでの制作だったが、演奏の焦点はむしろ定まっている。長年支えたエリック・ヤングが参加する最後の作品ともなった。メンバー交代の緊張を、バンドのキャラクターを見失わない新鮮な勢いへ変えた一枚である。

Automaton is the sixth album, on which Crashdïet — now on their second with Gabriel Keyes — rebooted their own raw glam metal image. Released in April 2022 and produced by the band themselves. The gap between riffs with a dangerous mood and sweet melody, and '80s choruses alongside modern sonic pressure, coexist. A stance of updating the sound for the times while never letting go of the genre's core runs clearly through the whole thing. From the short intro of the title track it flows into “Together Whatever” and “Shine On,” and the undulation is wide — the melodic beauty of “No Man's Land,” the addictiveness of “Darker Minds,” the drive of “Shell Shock,” the force of “We Die Hard,” and the closing ballad “I Can't Move On (Without You).” Steel Panther's Michael Starr guests on “Powerline.” It was made while touring was restricted by the pandemic, yet the playing's focus is if anything sharper. It also became the last album with long-serving Eric Young. A record that turned the tension of lineup change into fresh momentum without losing the band's character.
