Still Climbing

『Still Climbing』は、CINDERELLAがブルース・ロックの土臭さとハード・ロックの押し出しを結び直し、華美さより演奏の手触りを前面へ出した第4作にして最終スタジオ作だ。マーキュリーから1994年に発表された本作は、トム・キーファーが声帯の麻痺に見舞われたことで制作が大幅に遅れ、手術と約2年の活動休止を経て完成した。ドラムには、ジョン・メレンキャンプらとの仕事で知られる名手ケニー・アロノフがこの作品のみ参加している(最終曲“Hot & Bothered”のみカウリーが演奏)。 トム・キーファーのしゃがれた歌は力強く、ギターは派手な装飾よりもリフの粘りとフレーズの余韻を重視する。“Bad Attitude Shuffle”の躍動、“Through the Rain”の情感、そして映画『ウェインズ・ワールド』にも使われた“Hot & Bothered”まで、地に足の着いたロックンロールの強さが貫かれる。しかしグランジ全盛の時代にヘア・メタルは急速に居場所を失い、MTVも彼らの音楽を流さなくなった。全米178位に終わった本作を最後にレーベルを離れ、バンドは一度解散へと向かう。時代に迎合しなかった、誠実な幕引きである。

Still Climbing is the fourth and final studio album, on which Cinderella re-tied the earthiness of blues rock to hard-rock push, putting the feel of playing ahead of glamour. Released on Mercury in 1994, its making was badly delayed after Tom Keifer suffered a paralysis of his vocal cords, completed only after surgery and roughly two years away. Drums were handled by the noted Kenny Aronoff, known for his work with John Mellencamp, on this album alone (Fred Coury plays only on the closer “Hot & Bothered”). Tom Keifer’s rasping voice is powerful, and the guitar favors the grip of riffs and the ring of phrases over showy decoration. From the drive of “Bad Attitude Shuffle” and the feeling of “Through the Rain” to “Hot & Bothered,” used in the film Wayne’s World, a grounded rock-and-roll strength runs throughout. But in the heyday of grunge, hair metal rapidly lost its place and MTV stopped playing their music. After this album stalled at number 178 in the US, the band left the label and headed toward a breakup — an honest farewell that refused to pander to the times.
