Night Songs

『Night Songs』は、フィラデルフィアで結成されたCINDERELLAが、80年代ハード・ロックの華やかさの中へ、ブルースと70年代ロックの粘りを持ち込んだデビュー作だ。マーキュリーから1986年に発表され、トム・キーファー(ヴォーカル/ギター)の掠れた声が、曲に危うさと土臭い力を与えている。ギターのジェフ・ラバー、ベースのエリック・ブリッティンガムらを擁し、全曲をキーファーが書いた。彼らを見出したジョン・ボン・ジョヴィの後押しで契約に至り、レーベルメイトBON JOVIの『Slippery When Wet』ツアーへ前座として同行したことも、ブレイクの大きな追い風となった。 先行シングル“Shake Me”はチャートインを逃したものの、続くパワー・バラード“Nobody's Fool”が全米13位のヒットとなり、MTVでの露出とともにバンドの名を一気に広げた。アンセム“Shake Me”や“Somebody Save Me”の直進力、表題曲の勢いは、単なる流行の枠に収まらない実力を示す。大きなコーラスを備えながら、演奏の奥に古いロックンロールの熱を感じさせる本作は、全米3位・トリプル・プラチナを記録し、ヘア・メタルの古典として今も愛されている。

Night Songs is the debut album by the Philadelphia-formed Cinderella, which brought the grit of blues and 1970s rock into the glitz of 1980s hard rock. Released on Mercury in 1986, it is carried by the raspy voice of Tom Keifer (vocals/guitar), which lends the songs danger and an earthy power. Backed by guitarist Jeff LaBar and bassist Eric Brittingham, Keifer wrote every track; the band was discovered and championed by Jon Bon Jovi, whose push helped land their deal. Opening for labelmates Bon Jovi on the Slippery When Wet tour was also a major boost to their breakthrough. The lead single “Shake Me” failed to chart, but the power ballad “Nobody's Fool” that followed became a number 13 US hit, and with MTV exposure the band’s name spread fast. The direct drive of the anthem “Shake Me” and “Somebody Save Me,” and the momentum of the title track, show ability beyond mere trend. With big choruses yet the heat of old rock and roll underneath, the album reached number 3 in the US and went triple platinum, still loved as a hair-metal classic.
