Epic Obsession

『Epic Obsession』は、BURNING RAINが太いギター・リフ、ブルージーなリード、力強いヴォーカルを結び付け、王道ハード・ロックの熱量をまっすぐに鳴らした2013年発表の第3作だ。曲は豪快に進むが、サビにはしっかりとした歌メロがあり、リフだけに頼らない。前作から13年。その間ダグ・アルドリッチは2001年にディオへ、2003年にはデヴィッド・カヴァデイルに請われて再結成ホワイトスネイクへ移り、キース・セント・ジョンはロニー・モントローズのモントローズで歌っていた。 アルドリッチはホワイトスネイク在籍のまま、このバンドのための曲を書き始める。リズム隊は一新され、ベースにドッケンのショーン・マクナブ、ドラムにエース・フレーリー人脈のマット・スターが座った。ヨーロッパはフロンティアーズ、日本はワーナーミュージックからの発売である。同じ2013年、フロンティアーズは長らく廃盤だった最初の2枚を、リマスターと各2曲のボーナスを加えて再発した。ようやく過去作が手に取れるようになった年でもあった。長い不在にもかかわらず、アルドリッチとセント・ジョンの組み合わせが持つ手触りは少しも変わっていない。

Epic Obsession, released in 2013, is the third album, on which Burning Rain tied thick guitar riffs, bluesy leads and powerful vocals together and sounded mainline hard rock's heat straight. The songs move boldly, but the choruses hold real vocal melody and never lean on riffs alone. Thirteen years had passed. In that time Doug Aldrich went to Dio in 2001 and then, in 2003, to a reformed Whitesnake at David Coverdale's invitation, while Keith St. John was singing in Ronnie Montrose's Montrose. Still inside Whitesnake, Aldrich began writing songs for this band. The rhythm section was renewed: Dokken's Sean McNabb on bass and Matt Starr, of Ace Frehley's circle, on drums. Frontiers released it in Europe and Warner Music in Japan. That same year, Frontiers reissued the long out-of-print first two albums, remastered and with two bonus tracks each — so it was also the year the back catalogue finally became obtainable. For all the long absence, the texture of the Aldrich-St. John pairing has not changed in the slightest.
