Walk On

『Walk On』は、新ヴォーカリストにフラン・コスモを迎え、トム・ショルツの精密な音作りをアリーナ・ロックへ注いだ第4作だ。ブラッド・デルプが一時的にバンドを離れたため、コスモがリード・ヴォーカルを務め、ショルツがほとんどの楽器を、ゲイリー・ピールがギターを担った。前作からさらに8年を経て発表された本作は、ギターの重層とメロディの美点を保ちつつ、より演奏面に重心を置いている。 表題曲“Walk On”や“I Need Your Love”では、ショルツの分厚いギターとコスモの伸びやかな声が噛み合う。“Surrender to Me”“Livin' for You”のような楽曲にも、BOSTONらしい壮大さが息づく。デルプ不在ながらも、“Walk On”はデルプがショルツらと共作した楽曲であり、バンドの連続性を保っている。“Walkin' at Night”や“Magdalene”のような楽曲でも、緻密に構築されたギターの層が耳を惹く。ショルツの完璧主義は健在で、本作もまたスタジオ改装などで制作に長い年月を要した。コスモの声はデルプとは異なる質感ながら、BOSTONの壮大なサウンドによく合っている。全米7位・プラチナを記録した、ショルツの職人技が際立つ一枚である。

Walk On is the fourth album, on which — welcoming new vocalist Fran Cosmo — Tom Scholz's precise sound-making was poured into arena rock. Because Brad Delp had temporarily left the band, Cosmo took lead vocals, Scholz handled most of the instruments and Gary Pihl played guitar. Released after another eight-year gap, it keeps the layered guitars and melodic virtues while placing more weight on the playing. On the title track "Walk On" and "I Need Your Love," Scholz's thick guitars mesh with Cosmo's soaring voice. BOSTON's grandeur lives on songs like "Surrender to Me" and "Livin' for You" too. Though Delp was absent, "Walk On" was a song he co-wrote with Scholz and others, preserving the band's continuity. A record reaching US number 7 and Platinum, in which Scholz's craftsmanship stands out.
